DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE
 
VISION 
Community Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with protection and promotion of  health and well-being of the community through Primary Health Care approach.


MISSION
            Health for all  with a view to provide promotive, preventive, curative rehabilitative and holistic health care to the community.The aim of teaching in the Department of Community Medicine is directed towards preparation of the medical student to function as  physician of first contact.
Department of Community Medicine is located in the third floor of Faculty block of Medical College with necessary infrastructure- Research lab, Practical lab, two Demonstration halls of 75 seating capacity and separate lecture theatre hall are available for academic activities.
The Faculties  in the department are qualified with necessary clinical skills to be primary care physicians, researchers and administrators. The department library is lodged with updated community medicine books, journals, WHO Periodicals, DPH news magazines . The museum is stacked with adequate number of specimens of Public health Importance with proper labeling.
The Department of Community Medicine is committed towards improving quality of teaching and training in the practice of medicine holistically encompassing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of disease for Under Graduate medical students and Interns to equip them to serve as Physician of first contact as per the NMC guidelines of Indian Medical Graduate. It is not limited within the four walls of class rooms, but as a community based multidimensional training towards health and disease through family visits and exposure to various National Health Programmes. All MBBS students are trained in Research Methodology and perform Short term research projects during their course. Para medical students - B.Sc Respiratory therapy, BSc Anaesthesia Technology, MLT Sociology, MLT Medical entomology are also trained in this Department.
Primary healthcare to the Public is provided through a network of Rural and Urban health centers where curative services, preventive services and health promotion are implemented. Screening for communicable and non-communicable diseases forms an integral component besides geriatric, women and child health. Regular health education camps are organized in the respective field practice areas to increase the awareness among the people regarding various aspects of health promotion and disease prevention. The Department plays an active role in control of various communicable and non communicable diseases-


DENGUE – Mosquito breeding sources identification and reduction within college campus and hospital premises. Source reduction activities along with IEC are also done regularly in the community when MBBS students are taken for their field visit postings.


COVID 19- The Department is involved in data management through Control room, Tele-counselling services, 24x7 Vaccination center, awareness campaign in all peripheral health centers where CRRIs are posted.


MAKKALAI THEDI MARUTHUVAM CLINIC- Screening for Non Communicable Diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cancer are conducted and coordination with Primary and secondary care centres are implemented for patient care including palliative medicine
